This CD is a tribute to the composer Ronald Stevenson, who is best known for his piano music (he was a virtuoso pianist himself), but his extensive output includes most genres except opera. This CD features all of his works for recorder, interspersed with some of his songs in very different styles with piano and instrumental accompaniment. This CD features all of his works for recorder, interspersed with some of his songs in a wide variety of styles with piano and instrumental accompaniment. Stevenson’s Scottish composer friends were numerous, and this CD includes music by several of them, David Johnson, John Purser, Wilma Paterson, and Eddie McGuire. He also had many friends overseas, notably Grainger, some of whose music Stevenson arranged for various instruments. Grainger himself recorded at the home of his friend Balfour Gardiner two charming versions for recorders of the familiar and popular Country Gardens, which conclude this CD and have not been heard before.
