A definitive producer of his era, Vegyn (Dean Blunt, Frank Ocean, Travis Scott, JPEGMafia), marks up his 5th and most impressive LP, dripping with ohrwurming hooks, lavish strings, and guest vox by John Glacier and co.

In the 10 years since Vegyn gave a USB of demos to James Blake at Plastic People, the London born and bred artist has been in hot demand by some of rap and alt. music’s most feted artists, sought out for his bright but gauzy style of melodic chops and rugged drums and near psych-pop production lustre. With his 5th LP ‘The Road To Hell Is Paved With Good Intentions’ Vegyn firms up a definitive statement of solo style and pattern with a kaleidoscopic display of his revered style, spanning low slung rap wooze thru good times house puckered with exquisite production. While evidently a product of his times, it’s also worth mentioning that Vegyn (real name: Joseph Thornalley) is the sire of one Phil Thornalley – producer of absolutely legendary works by The Cure, Prefab Sprout, and Natalie Imbruglia – and it’s fair to say the apple fell close to the tree in Vegyn’s case, sharing a real knack for timeless pop immediacy that makes this album such a gem.

Plotted with a clear, absorbing, narrative emotive cadence, ‘TRTHIPWGI’ beautifully wraps you up in Vegyn’s world with a supreme balance of songwriting and sound design. With judicious feel for atmosphere, he uses the longform canvas to sketch out a utopian dérive for sunny day headphone mooches that portrays the pulse and characters of London in their best light. Opening with the micro dosed scenes of a ranting preacher giving way to John Glacier’s multitracked wooze in ‘A Dream Goes On Forever’, his instrumentals shapeshift between economic D&B on ‘Another 9 Days’ to pitch perfect R&B soul on ‘Turn Me Inside’ ft. Léa Sen and reminding of another neo R&B starlet, Clara La San. It only continues to unfold like a daydream, drifting thru the effervescent breaks of ‘Halo Flip’ with Lauren Auder to the fuzzy headed bliss of ‘The Path Less Travelled’, air-stepping house for the weekend in ‘Makeshift Tourniquet’, and end of the bar blooz in ‘Trust’, whilst properly cystallizing his late ‘90s/early ‘00s electronica influences in the pill belly uplift of ‘Last Night I Dreamt I Was Alone’.
