Four Johnny Thunders & the Heartbreakers’ demo sessions from 1976 & 1977, in limited transparent 180g magenta vinyl.

Includes inner bag with a Walter Lure interview by Thunders’ biographer Nina Antonia in 2005 and a 12” poster insert of the Roberta Bayley L.A.M.F. cover outake photo. Due for release on Record Store Day Black Friday, November 25 2022.

Compiled together on one album for the first time, are four Johnny Thunders & the Heartbreakers’ studio demo sessions – two from 1976 in New York and two from 1977 in London. Previously they’d appeared mostly scattered over now-deleted box sets.

The album shows the development of the band building towards their classic 1977 ‘L.A.M.F.’ album (recently reissued with a newly found original master*), and also points to the direction they would have gone had they not split up. It includes ‘I Wanna Be Loved’ taken from a 1/4″ master-tape discovered by Walter Lure in his attic, after a version mastered from cassette appeared on the now-deleted ‘Definitive Edition’ box set.

Side One: Born Too Loose, Chinese Rocks, Let Go, Can’t Keep My Eyes On You, I Love You, It’s Not Enough, Do You Love Me, Take A Chance. Side Two: Born To Lose, I Wanna Be Loved, Going Steady, Flight, Pirate Love, Give Her A Great Big Kiss, Too Much Junkie Business, London Boys. The original version of L.A.M.F. (which stands for “Like a Mother F*cker”) was marred by shoddy production. This 1984 remix of the album (under the supervision of Johnny Thunders) places L.A.M.F. favorably alongside other New York punk bands from the late ’70s. Borrowing inspiration from his old band, the New York Dolls, along with Chuck Berry, Keith Richards, the Ramones, and heroin, Thunders & the Heartbreakers’ junkie antics translate well to disc. Songs like “One Track Mind,” “Chinese Rocks,” and “Pirate Love” are great examples of these influences. Although the Heartbreakers were not as lyrically intuitive as ex-member Richard Hell or Television, the music here is the key. Jerry Nolan’s steady beats, and Thunders’ searing guitar show that the Heartbreakers were no lightweights. This album, along with his great solo album, So Alone, stand as his definitive statements. – Brian Flota
