The fact that the Berliner Lautten Compagney Berlin and their director Wolfgang Katschner “repeatedly produce ingenious crossover albums” has already become a “hallmark of the ensemble”. (BR-Klassik) For example, the music of the most famous English Baroque composer Henry Purcell met selected music of the Beatles on the last album “Time Travel”.
The press enthusiastically commented: “…you can hardly combine old and new more skillfully and cleverly, everything here is organic and logical, nothing seems intentional or set up.”This also applies to the new album of the Berliner Ensemble. “New Vivaldi” presents well-known and rarely heard music by Antonio Vivaldi – but what is special are the new arrangements by Wolfgang Katschner, lutenist and ensemble leader, which are accompanied by a special line-up of the Lautten Compagney, including a saxophone.
The imaginative arrangements place Vivaldi’s music in a new context and create a completely new color by combining a baroque ensemble, interesting percussive effects and the saxophone used as a soloist. So the summer of the 4 seasons becomes the “Summer Slow Hot Blues” and the winter becomes cold, never dreary with songs like “l’inverno focoso”. Also worth listening are the new beautiful instrumental versions of Vivaldi’s famous aria “Sposa son disprezzata” from his opera Il Bajazet or “Veni, veni me sequere” from his only surviving oratorio Juditha Triumphans.
